Fourteen island nations in the Pacific region participated in Indonesia-Pasific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) on Human Development and Maritime Sustainability in Jakarta, on 23-24 July 2018. It is a new parliamentary partnership forum proposed by Indonesia and the Pacific island nations.

Nurhayati Ali Assegaf, Chair of the Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation of the Indonesian House of Representatives (BKSAP), stated that IPPP is an initiative from the House to seek a new breakthrough to boost cooperation partnership in some areas, particularly economy, with nations in the Pacific region.

“IPPP is held to strengthen diplomatic relations between Indonesian Parliament and Pacific island nations’. Thank God, out of 16 nations, 14 nations, including 9 Speakers, are attending (the forum),” Nurhayati said after a welcome dinner for delegates on 22 July 2018.

These 14 countries are Cook Islands, Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Republic of Palau, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Polynesia, dan New Caledonia.

The Democrat Party politician said the forum, under the theme of human resourcesdevelopment and maritime sustainability, was a historic event because it is the first time Indonesia and Pacific island nations met to tighten connectivity.

“We have just held several bilateral meetings. They express their gratitude for Indonesian people hospitality. All of us agree on strengthening relations,” Nurhayati said.

She added that the Pacific island nations could explore Indonesian cultural diversity in this forum. Like many Pacific island nations, some Indonesians are also Melanesian and Polynesian..

“We need to introduce those things in order that they understand, this is Indonesia. We are a sovereign unitary republic and never discriminate people based on their tribes and ethnicities. That is what we are stressing and they are very open (to the idea)and we can feel itat the welcome dinner tonight. They are blended into one and feel like home here,” Nurhayati said. (ann/sf-mut)
