The Secretariat General of the DPR RI constitutes a DPR supporting component, serving as State Institution Secretariat led by a Secretary General and in performing its tasks, he/ she is responsible to the Leadership of the DPR.

The Secretary General is assisted by Vice Secretary General and several Deputies. The Secretary General the Leadership of the DPR..

The DPR may appoint a number of experts in accordance with the need who serve to assist the acceleration of the performance of tasks and functions of the DPR under the coordination of the Secretary General of the DPR. To assist the performance of tasks of the DPR complementary organs, the Secretariat General may form an Assisting Team.

Experts and/or Assisting Team of the DPR present in the DPR meeting at the invitation of the Leadership of the DPR or the DPR complementary organ concerned have rights to speak upon the permission of the Meeting Chairperson.

The organizational structure and working procedures of the Secretariat general are stipulated under a Presidential Decree.

The tasks of the Secretariat General are, among other things:

• providing technical, administrative and expertise assistance for the DPR;
• implementing the household policy of the DPR stipulated by the Leadership of the DPR, including the welfare of Members and employees of the Secretariat General; making clarifications and providing data required by the BURT;
• undertaking other matters assigned by the Leadership of the DPR; and
• reporting in writing the performing of its tasks during the previous Session Year to the Leadership of the DPR at the beginning of each Session Year by forwarding the carbon copies to the Steering Committee and the BURT.

The General Secretary upon the approval of the Leadership of the DPR may serve as Member of an international organization grouping the Secretaries General of Parliaments and gives a written report on the accountability of his/her activity implementation in the relevant organization to the Leadership of the DPR.
