House Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation (BKSAP) Chairperson, Fadli Zon, raised concerns over the escalating old conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia as the two sides launch strikes on each other, citing media reports that hundreds of people either had been killed or injured in the war that drew deep concerns of the global community.

“I am very concerned about the attacks that Azerbaijan and Armenia launched on each other in Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh,” Zon said in a written statement on Tuesday (20/10/2020). “I urge the two countries to abide by the ceasefire agreement, given the fact that around 750 people have been killed since last September 27.”

He questioned the fragile truce deal reached by both sides on October 10 and 18. “Even only hours the ceasefire was agreed, Armenia attacked Azerbaijan’s city of Ganja and killed 13 civilians and injured 50 others. Such action is deeply regrettable,” he added.

He added that the violation of the ceasefire agreement threatens the future of conflict resolution between the two countries. The situation will grow even worse as the entire world is currently hit by a crisis because of the COVID-19 pandemic. "Azerbaijan and Armenia must exercise self-restraint and be fully committed to the ceasefire agreement. Otherwise, the two countries will face bleak future. Both countries must return to honest dialogue based on international law and relevant UN Security Council Resolutions," he asserted.

Zon called on the international community to urge the two conflicting countries to comply with the ceasefire agreement. "The international community, especially the UN, must play a bigger role in the efforts to impose a ceasefire as an emergency solution to stop casualties. A ceasefire is a key to easing tensions. Unfortunately, the UN cannot do that much in this regard," he criticized.

On the other hand, the Great Indonesian Movement Party (Gerindra) Politician emphasized the urgency of implementing the UN Security Council Resolutions Number 822, 853, 874, and 884 of 1993 and the UN General Assembly Resolution Number A / RES / 62/243. "The relevant UN Security Council resolutions expressly urge the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the Armenian military from the Azerbaijan territories, including Nagorno-Karabakh," Zon said.

The legislator of West Java constituency expresses his full support for the vital role that the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has played as the mediator for Azerbaijan-Armenian conflict. “OSCE plays a vital role to restart productive dialogue within the framework of the Minsk Process. Moreover, of equally significant importance is revitalizing the roles of OSCE and ensuring nonpartisanship of all. The UN must play a key role in this regard,” He added.

He believed the conflict settlement of the two former Soviet states must be based on international laws and regulations, particularly the commitment on respecting the sovereignity and integrity of each country. “Any agression against the sovereignity and integrity of any countriy including Azerbaijan’s is unacceptable and baseless,” the Member of the Foreign Affairs Commission concluded.
